Deposit held hostage for 71 days

California gives a landlord 21 days to return a deposit or send an itemized statement. Mine took 71 days, four emails, and a certified letter before a check showed up — minus $450 for 'carpet replacement' in a unit where the carpet was already stained in my move-in photos. He counts on tenants not knowing the law. Know the law.

Fine apartment, exhausting landlord

Nothing here is a horror story, it's death by a thousand cuts: monthly 'inspections' announced by text the night before, questions about guests, a camera pointed at the parking lot that he reviews and comments on. Rent is fair and the unit is solid. You just never feel like it's actually your home.

Roaches on day one
1555 El Camino Real, Redwood City, CA
Opened the kitchen cabinets the night I moved in and found roach traps from the previous tenant and live roaches behind the stove. Vince called it a 'pre-existing city problem' and took a month to send pest control, who sprayed once and never came back. The building itself is quiet and the neighbors are great. The management is the pest problem.
