Mice in the walls, shrugs from management

We could hear mice in the walls by October and caught four in traps by Christmas. Sal's response was to hand my roommate a box of steel wool and say 'this is Brooklyn, there's mice.' Exterminator came once, in March, after a 311 complaint. The super also let himself in twice 'to check the radiator' with zero notice.

Preferential rent games at renewal
Landlord overall
My lease listed a 'preferential rent' well below the legal rent, and at renewal Ricci Management tried to jump me to the full legal amount — a $600/month increase — claiming the preference was 'one-time only.' A tenant clinic told me that isn't how it works anymore and a lawyer's letter settled it, but half my floor just paid. Read your renewal with a clinic before you sign anything.

Grumbly, but the building runs

Counterpoint to the horror stories: in three years our heat and hot water always worked, the halls are mopped weekly, and when the front lock broke it was replaced the same day. Sal is gruff, everything is by phone call like it's 1987, and you should absolutely document your deposit. But the basics get done, which in this neighborhood is not nothing.
